This is a Black Genoa fig. I don't know much about its seasonal cycle, but it had no sooner matured this first fig, than others are forming on the new growth.

It suffers damage to its leaves, though. It looks like it could be wind and rain that tears at the edges, although I suspect it rather is a bug, but I cannot locate the blighter. The fruit was as delicious as the shop bought variety even though not ripe to the very edge. Maybe I was just too keen!

Looks like snails feeding from the leaves, doesn't it? Is this your hand holding the fig in the first photo? Looks like my palm of hand ;-)
Funnly enough, I had not thought of snails or slugs. I had not seen silvery trails. But yes, the bites could be snails.
As for the palm of my hand, I had to smile. I guess hands do look like that - but only if they are given to much hard work in the fields!! The fig is lying on my kitchen chopping board ...

Doesn't the fruit look amazing. You do wonders with your small sunny garden. All the chopped out bits in my leaves are from the hailstorms earlier in the year.

Diane, yes down here figs are about $2.50 each. But just the avocado that I like are nearly $4 each.
Now, I have started my second avocado seed to sprouting but if what Peter says in the post below this is true (that an avocado need 3 feet of soil) then I am in strife. It rings true to me when I see the size of the tap root in that slimey photograph.
I might be tempted to switch to another fig tree and ditch the avocado.
